Why is good digestive health important?

Our digestive system has the important job of processing the foods we eat into nutrients needed by our body. Getting enough fiber in your diet has many benefits and is important for maintaining digestive health. Unfortunately more than 9 out of 10 Americans do not get the recommended amount of fiber. A smart step towards helping naturally regulate your digestive system is to gradually increase your fiber intake by choosing fiber containing cereals. Choose a diet that is rich in a variety of fiber containing foods such as cereals, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Remember drinking adequate fluids and regular physical activity are also important for digestive health.

A food satisfaction study at the University of Sydney in Australia showed that the foods below scored high at satisfying hunger and controlling appetite. The 11 foods are also high in fiber, which means these fat blockers help whisk calories out of the body before they can turn into fat. They are potatoes, oatmeal, oranges, apples, whole wheat pasta, baked beans, whole grain bread, popcorn, bran cereal, lentils and brown rice.

One food not listed is cocoa because American companies take out the majority of the protein and fiber before selling it to wholesalers and retailers. Our Natural Cocoa has 28% protein and 29% per cent fiber which will place it up there with the best super foods for good digestion.

The body is designed for house cleaning---ridding itself of many chemicals, drugs, and environmental pollutants, along with toxic substances that are inadvertently manufactured by the body itself in the daily process of metabolism. The better a body can rid itself of toxic subastances, the better it can manage the other numerous activities involved in healthy living.

Why do we need detoxification programs? Taken from "Healthy Digestion the Natural Way" by D. Lindsey Berkson a consulting scholar, center for bioenvironmental research at Tulane and Xavier Universities.

Modern medicine is miraculous in emergency situations, but in nonemergencey situations, modern medicine rarely asks Why did this body get ill? How can we prevent it from getting ill again? How did this person's lifestyle contribute to this illness? (THESE ARE QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD BE ASKING YOURSELF BEFORE RUNNING TO A DOCTOR FOR MEDICATION.)

In contrast, all natural healing methods have one core philosphy in common: that true healing starts from the inside out---not one part at a time. Be it nutrition, osteopthy, cranial work, chiropractic, herbal medicine, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, reflexology, massage therapy, psychotherapy, or yoga---these schools of healing believe that the initial causes of illness must be removed and the body must be revialized, cleansed, and become free of a number of possible blockages (nutritional, energetic, physical, emotional, stuctural or breathing), so that the body can be allowed to heal itself.

The body has innate wisdom regarding its organs, tissues, and parts. When the body first gets out of balance, it still has this wisdom to be able to heal itself. This explains why the early stage of illness is the optimal time to attack a problem. If the problem goes on long enough, the healing aspect of the body (the wisdom) will become distorted.

Everything in the body and mind is connnected. A problem in the shoulder might be coming from the gallbladder. A stomach problem may be caused by poor dietary habits or by emotionall upset. So a detoxification program also includes mind-body cleansing tools, such as affirmations or times of silence.

Detoxification, depending on the different healing disciplines, may be called by different names: healing leaky gut, identifying/eliminating allergies, identifying and treating malabsorption, clearing congestion, revitalization, restructuring, renutrifying, etc. All these trerms refer to getting at the core of what is preventing the body from healing itself. Detoxfication, or cleansing, as it is popularly referred to, means getting the body unblocked so it can call upon its natural resources to heal itself.

Reasons for a Detoxification Program...

Chronic digestive problems.

Chronic health problems (occurring over three months, or recurring several times).

Planning a pregnancy in the next several years and wanting to prepare your body. The health status of future moms and dads two years before conception influences the health of the yet-to-born baby. (Do not do a detox proram within two to three months of getting pregnant.)

Healing from an addiction. Work with a professional.

Once-a-year house cleaning for prevention of disease.

In the future, techniques of detoxification will become more routine, like getting our teeth cleaned. This will be necessary because our water, air, and food are polluted. Our bodies have become chemical receptacles from external environmental contaminants. And consuming junk food creates internal pollution.

Warning: People who should NOT do a detox program include: pregnant women; infants and children; those healing from recent surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation; and those experiencing active bowel disease, such as bleeding colitis, ulcers, or Crohn's disease.

According to a study in "Annals of Epidemiology", people who attend religious services tend to be healthier than those who never attend religious services. More specifically, weekly churchgoers have a lower risk of death than those who never set foot inside a place of worship.

Many researchers believe that at the bottom line there seems to be a strong connection between the mind, the spirit, and the body. Improve one, and you have an effect on the other. Praying, meditating, or attending religious services may not cure a disease, but those activities may make you feel better and contribute to a more positive outlook on life.

And why wouldn't it make you feel better to know God. God is love and we all need love. By knowing Jesus Christ we receive the holy spirit by praying in his name and asking for a counselor which is the Spirit of truth. Who among us wants to live in a spirit of hopelessness and lies. Paul said it very well that after all is said and done these three things remain when you accept the teachings of Christ and try to follow in his footsteps. And they are hope, faith and love. And love is the greatest of the three. If you do not hold a baby and let it feel the warmth, touch and feeling of another human being, it will die. We are no different and if we do not receive love our spirit dies even as our body may live on for a while longer.

Read Titus 2:11-14 and Psalm 36

The ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

Until I was privileged to pastor a parish in western Oklahoma, I didn't realize how some denominations treated the grace of God. Human reason dominated their interpretation of Scripture. They used reason to try to explain the grace of God. One result is the opinion that a person can make a decision to believe in God. Another is the notion that the harder I strive to live a Christian life, the more God will love me.

Imagine trying to explain God's grace logically! It can't be done. It's a mystery God declares and faith trusts. The Holy Spirit brings us to faith through the Gospel. (The counselor of truth) We cannot logically explain parents' love for their children. So how can we explain God's love for us?

Paul taught the young pastor Titus to proclaim the Gospel of grace. Grace presumes guilt; other wise grace would not be grace. Therefore, the Law must be proclaimed to uncover sin. But even more, the Gospel must be proclaimed to forgive sin. Paul's greatest joy was to declare the Gospel God had given him, the Good News of grace in Christ, which leads sinners like us to the mercy of our loving and merciful Savior.

Thank you, Lord for keeping me in Your grace. Amen.
